EZip Coastline available at Walmart for under $500 US

The EZip Coastline is currently (at the time of this article) $449 at Walmart.com. This is not offered in the stores, only online. While it would appear to be a good commute bike the lack of suspension does concern me.

One very interesting thing is the single chain ring and the rear hub combination. The rear hub has some standard sprockets then one huge one. That must allow you to fly while using the electric motor.

Optibike add the Rohloff Speedhub to the 2010 850R to improve the ride and cut down on maintenance.

While still one of my favs I still can't afford one.

This bike is supposed to get up to 15Mph with a range of 23-30 miles (dependant on normal pedaling and rider weight). They incorporate PTS (Pedal Tourque Sensor) into the crank to help determine how much power to add. Schwinn Tailwind

This bike is due to come out in early 2009. It is supposed to get between 25 and 35 miles per charge but the cool feature is it is supposed to fully charge in 30 minutes using the Toshiba’s Super Charge ion Battery (SCiB) technology.

I have heard of an MSRP of over $3000 making this one kind of steep.

2008 Schwinn World GSE

I just test drove the 2008 Schwinn World GSE. The World is powered by a 180 Watt continuous: 250 watts max front hub rotor motor. The battery was a Schwinn Protanium Lithium Polymer 10AH. The bike handled well and helped me up some minor hills quite well but for a larger rider (6’1”, 240lbs) it didn’t seem to have quite enough umph. According to the Schwinn website the charge time of 4 hours is supposed to take you up to 60 miles depending on conditions and rider size.

I did find the bike very light even with the battery. If you did run out of battery it would probably be pretty easy to pedal.

The controls are very simple (on or off) and the display shows how much juice you have left. It does not have regenerative breaking and is purely power assist. You must pedal.

With a price tag of around $1600 US (MSRP 1799.99US) I think it is a good commute bike.
